And I agree that constructive criticism is the key to improvement, and without a doubt, we all, not just those of us in Hollywood, operate in flawed systems. However, I think there is a distinction to be made between criticizing something in a constructive way and tearing it (along with its fans) down. I’m sure there is a happy medium, but I don’t quite know how to find it.

Mostly I just needed to let off some steam, and I was feeling upset at the intense antagonism directed towards this movie.

Can I just say - posts on tumblr make me feel like a terrible person sometimes, and I hate that. There are all these things out there that are funny and well-made and not trying to offend anyone in any way and I want to enjoy them innocently and without worrying that enjoying them makes me less of a person, or wrong somehow.

Like star trek. Guys, I love star trek. And I was so excited for the movie. Like, unbelievably excited. And I went to see it, and it was amazing. Truly, truly amazing. The acting was incredible, the special effects were magical, and the writing was clever and witty and I loved it. And then I got home and was like EVERYONE MUST HAVE LOVED THIS MOVIE BECAUSE YES AND I’LL GET ON TUMBLR AND GEEK OUT ABOUT IT BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT TUMBLR IS FOR. And so far, all I have seen are rants and complaints and hate. In fact, the only thing people seem to care about is that Khan was played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve took her clothes off.

Okay, I get it. We expect more. We expect star trek to present a paragon of equality, as it once did. And maybe I’m naive, maybe I’m stupid, maybe I’m just trying to give JJ Abrams the benefit of the doubt here, but I don’t think the intention was to whitewash, or to marginalize, or to objectify. In The Original Series, Khan was played by Ricardo Montalban, a Mexican. The character Khan’s full name is Khan Noonien Singh, a sikh from the Asian continent. … anyone see where I’m going here? Even in the original, Khan was not portrayed by an ethnically appropriate actor. So maybe I’m missing the point, maybe as long as the role is taken up by a person of color, it doesnt’t matter. Cast anyone, as long as they’re not white.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not arguing that there is oppression against whites, of course there’s not. But I think it is also important to remember that not everything is an attack, and not every white person serves as a representation of years of oppression and hardship. Benedict Cumberbatch was cast because of his acting credits and skills (which are many and not to be denied by anyone). I am not at all bothered by the fact that Khan was protrayed by a white man, as to me, the most important trait to be maintained is CHARACTER. And I have to wonder, if Khan was played by a black man, or a hispanic man (like Ricardo Montalban, who was an amazing, wonderful Khan), would people be as upset? Does it make me a bad person that I’m not?

As for how women are portrayed, come on guys, this is nothing new. Yeah, we all had high hopes for Uhura, and without a doubt, the Abrams-verse has not done a thing to further the femenist cause (Carol Marcus, case in point). However, Uhura is undoubtedly a badass. In both movies she proves herself, showing her prowess for languages and holding her own in the field without Kirk or Spock having to protect her. In the Original Series, Uhura, while awesome, was constantly cowering behind the manly officers and being rescued. In the new verse, we have an equally sexy, equally smart, but, I would argue, even more badass Uhura. The added romance plotline was unecessary, but does not detract from her character or her strength as an independent woman. On the contrary, it shows that she is able to be independent and badass and also carry on a relationship. After all, why should they be exclusive?

I will agree with the majority of people that Carol Marcus was a dissapointment. In the Original Series, Carol Marcus is introduced as a scientist, living independently of a man and raising her son on her own. She is awesome, and intelligent, and fiercely protective - and ultiamtely turns to Kirk for help. Yes, in the new movie Carol Marcus takes her clothes off. It is not needed to further the plot. It is funny, it is awkward, and when it was over I forgot all about it. What I did not forget was her saving Dr. McCoy, was her standing up to her father to save the crew, was her bravery and courage to do what was right. Carol Marcus in the new films is not at all the same Carol Marcus of TOS, however, she, like Uhura, maintains the traits of a badass woman, albeit one there mostly for men to ogle.

So if you’ve actually taken the time to read all this, please tell me, am I horrible for not caring? Am I horrible for wanting to enjoy this movie for the fantastic piece of cinema that it is, and not worry about the casting or the nudity or how many feminist tests it may or may not pass? In my opinion, the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s future remains, even in Abrams-verse. We have a lot to sort out, obviously, and many more steps to take before equality is reached, but it seems to me that instead of sitting on tumblr and complaining about the newest attack, we ought to seek new ways to speak up, to make a difference, and to encourage everyone to make the world a better place - not by discounting an entire race of people, nor by grouping multiple races and ethnicities together into one category, but by spreading love and kindness and respect for the things that people do.

Hate only breeds more hate guys - spread the love. As for me, I hope to find some people I can spread my love of Star Trek with. If you have some love to share, let me know.
